Jose Perez Enters the Transfer Portal…Again

MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — The long and strange college basketball career of Jose Perez is about to take another turn, as he has informed Joe Tipton that he has entered the transfer portal…again. Perez, 25, has already attended four schools – Gardner-Webb, Marquette, Manhattan and West Virginia – during his time in college and will now look to finish his career with his 5th school.

Perez, a 6’5 guard from Bronx, New York, averaged 18.9 points and 4.5 assists per game when he last played during the 2021-2022 season with Manhattan. However, head coach Josh Eilert informed Perez that he is no longer a part of the team last week due to academic issues.

Perez entered the transfer portal during the offseason, flirted with the idea of going elsewhere, was re-recruited by Eilert and was reportedly given a big NIL deal to return. He eventually returned, but his inability to follow team rules after being given numerous chances was the last straw.

After learning of his dismissal from the team, Perez responded on social media by saying, “(I’m) 25 years year old in undergrad classes after I graduated. I never accepted being put into undergrad classes but people wanted me eligible. The only disagreement was going to study hall and that’s where the decision was made, nowhere else.” He also added that he “got thrown to the streets like a dead animal.”

Eilert simply said, “We wish Jose the best in his future endeavors.”

Now, Perez will attempt to find a team willing to take on the baggage that he brings. Early reports say that Arizona State, Michigan and Ole Miss are the teams to watch early. He will reportedly visit Ole Miss on Friday and then visit other schools in the near future.
