Josh Eilert Emerges as Favorite to Replace Bob Huggins

Bob Huggins’ assistant Josh Eilert is expected to take over as the new head coach of the West Virginia Mountaineers.

MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — After conducting a national search for its next head coach, it appears that West Virginia University has found its replacement for Bob Huggins.

Josh Eilert, 42, has emerged as the favorite to take over the job and an announcement could come as early as Saturday, according to Adam Zagoria.

Eilert has spent the last 15 seasons on Mountaineer basketball staff, serving as an interim assistant coach during the 2016-17 season and was named assistant men’s basketball coach in July 2022.

It’s expected that Eilert will keep the full coaching staff and support staff in place for the year and will attempt to keep the remaining roster together. Eilert has been the pick by the players on the current roster and this hiring gives West Virginia the best chance of keeping them together.

His contract is unclear at this time, but it’s expected that Eilert will be named the “interim head coach” for a year and that West Virginia will re-evaluate the future of the program after this next season.

According to the WVU Sports official website, “Eilert played two seasons of basketball at Kansas State from 2002-04 after transferring from Cloud County Community College, where he was a two-year letterman and one-year starter.

He was a first team all-Big 12 academic selection as a senior and four times was named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Eilert was honored with the Keith Amerson Academic Award in 2004. While at Cloud County, he earned KJCAA Academic All-America honors as a sophomore.

A native of Osborne, Kansas, Eilert earned his bachelor’s degree in marketing from Kansas State in 2004. He earned his master’s degree in College Student Personnel/Intercollegiate Athletics from Kansas State in 2007.

Eilert and his wife, Brandi, have two sons, Brendan and Tristan, and a daughter, Emri.”
