Newcomer Named to Paul Hornung Award Watch List

WVU Wide Receiver Ja’Shaun Poke has been named to the Paul Hornung Award Watch List.

Morgantown, WV – Throughout the award’s short history, only one former West Virginia Mountaineer has won the Paul Hornung Award – given to the nation’s most versatile player.

That player was Tavon Austin.

While it will be nearly impossible to replicate Austin’s skill set on the field, WVU Newcomer Ja’Shaun Poke has been added to the award’s 2023 watch list.

Poke comes to WVU from Kent State via the transfer portal. In four seasons with the Golden Flashes, the Georgia native grabbed 81 passes for 1,033 yards and 5 touchdowns. He displayed his versatility while also carrying the ball 13 times for 66 yards and 1 touchdown, and returning 43 kickoffs for 1,110 yards and 1 touchdown.

Though he will also play on the offensive side of the ball for the Mountaineers, it is expected that Poke will have his greatest impact in the return game.
