OMAHA, Nebraska — The West Virginia Mountaineers are officially one of the final four teams remaining in the College World Series.
For a program that had never made it to Omaha before this season, that statement alone is remarkable. But this Mountaineer team isn’t interested in moral victories anymore. Not after winning the Big 12 regular season championship. Not after reaching Omaha for the first time in school history. And certainly not after battling its way into the final four teams standing.
The field has now been narrowed down to West Virginia, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and either Texas or Georgia, who are still battling through Bracket Two.
On West Virginia’s side of the bracket, the situation is pretty straightforward. The Mountaineers and North Carolina are the only teams remaining in Bracket One. The Tar Heels currently hold the advantage after defeating West Virginia earlier in Omaha, which means UNC remains undefeated in the bracket while the Mountaineers have one loss.

So what does West Virginia need to do?
The answer is simple, even if the task is difficult.
The Mountaineers must beat North Carolina twice.
The first meeting comes in the Bracket One Final. If North Carolina wins, West Virginia’s season is over. If the Mountaineers win, they would hand the Tar Heels their first loss in Omaha and force a winner-take-all rematch the following day. The winner of that game would advance to the College World Series Championship Series.
On the other side of the bracket, Oklahoma sits in the driver’s seat after remaining undefeated through its first two games. The Sooners are waiting to see who emerges from the elimination side between Texas and Georgia. Whoever survives will still have to beat Oklahoma twice to advance to the championship series.
As difficult as the road may seem, the reality is this: West Virginia is just two wins away from playing for a national championship.
Think about that.
When the season began, the goal was to get to Omaha. The Mountaineers accomplished that. Then they won a game in Omaha. Then they survived an elimination game against Troy. Now they find themselves among the last four teams in college baseball.
The path is clear. Beat North Carolina twice and earn a spot in the best-of-three College World Series Championship Series. From there, West Virginia would need two wins against the winner of Bracket Two to bring home the first national championship in program history.
It’s a tall order.
But then again, so was winning the Big 12. So was reaching Omaha. So was becoming one of the last four teams standing.
This team has spent the entire season proving people wrong. Now, with only three teams left standing in its way, the Mountaineers are closer than ever to accomplishing something no West Virginia baseball team has ever done.
