MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — The West Virginia Mountaineers are still alive in Omaha.
Facing a win-or-go-home situation, West Virginia delivered one of its most complete performances of the season, shutting out Troy 12-0 to advance in the College World Series and keep its national championship hopes alive.
For six innings, the game felt like the type of tense postseason battle fans have come to expect this time of year. The Mountaineers held a 2-0 lead and were looking for the big hit that could create some breathing room. That’s exactly what they got from Gavin Kelly.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Kelly stepped to the plate and crushed a three-run home run, turning a two-run advantage into a commanding 5-0 lead. It was the kind of swing that completely changed the complexion of the game and sent the Mountaineer faithful into a frenzy.

Before Troy could recover, Sean Smith delivered another blow. Later in the inning, Smith hit an RBI single to push the lead to 6-0 and put the Trojans in an even deeper hole.
West Virginia wasn’t finished.
In the seventh inning, Ben Lumsden added the final touch with an RBI single that extended the lead to 7-0. By that point, the Mountaineers had complete control of the game, and the pitching staff made sure Troy never mounted a threat.

The victory not only eliminates the Trojans from the College World Series, but it also moves West Virginia one step closer to accomplishing something no team in program history has ever done.
So what happens now?
The Mountaineers advance to the Bracket 1 Final against North Carolina. However, because the Tar Heels remain undefeated in the bracket, West Virginia will need to beat UNC twice in order to advance to the College World Series Championship Series.
The first meeting will take place tomorrow. If West Virginia wins, it would force a winner-take-all rematch with North Carolina for the right to play for a national championship. If the Tar Heels win, West Virginia’s historic season comes to an end.
In other words, the Mountaineers have given themselves a chance.
After suffering a disappointing loss to North Carolina earlier in the tournament, many teams would have struggled to regroup. Instead, West Virginia responded exactly the way championship-caliber teams do. The Mountaineers put the loss behind them, took care of business against Troy, and earned another opportunity.
That’s all you can ask for this time of year.
Now the challenge becomes even greater. West Virginia must beat one of the best teams in college baseball not once, but twice. It won’t be easy. North Carolina entered Omaha as the No. 5 national seed for a reason.
Then again, people have been doubting this Mountaineer team all season long.
One thing is certain: West Virginia’s season is not over. The Mountaineers are still standing, still fighting, and still just two wins away from playing for a national championship.
The dream remains alive in Omaha.
