Wren Baker Speaks On State of Football Program

WVU Athletic Director Wren Baker had the opportunity to speak about the Mountaineer Football program at Big 12 Media Days.

Morgantown, WV – The Big 12 Preseason Poll was a hot topic of conversation for the Mountaineers at the conference’s media days. Head Coach Neal Brown spoke highly of his team, and claimed they are ready to “prove them wrong” when referring to the media.

Athletic Director Wren Baker also had the chance to speak with the media. In a conversation that he had with College Sports on Sirius XM, Baker spoke about the current state of the Mountaineer Football program.

“Everything that I see, I think we have a chance this year to surprise some people. We were surprised at the preseason pick, but as a recovering coach…I like to have a chip on my shoulder. I like being able to walk in a locker room and say ‘they don’t respect you, let’s go out and prove it.’ It gives you a different edge.”

Baker certainly doubled down on what Brown had been sharing with the media. He believes that the Mountaineers have a chance to prove the media wrong, and that they will have a successful 2023 campaign.

He ended his interview with a quote that may upset some fans, but really displays the confidence that he has in Neal Brown has behind the scenes.

“Hopefully Coach Brown is our coach for a long time.”

For a coach that is presumably on the “hot seat,” Neal Brown sure does have the respect of his new athletic director with no previous ties to him.
